Organizational capacity building in non-profit sport clubs: exploring the role of competition as a capacity building stimulus

Research question Non-profit sport clubs are operating in an increasingly competitive market due to the growth of for-profit sector and changes participation patterns. To counteract competition, expected take strategic action by investing their organizational capacities. The aim present study is explore if how perceived competition from other organizations acts as external capacity building stimulus for non-profit clubs.Research methods Longitudinal data were drawn a nationwide online survey Germany between years 2011 2020 (ranging n = 1366 5315 observations).Results findings results highlight that faced with commercial providers driven invest paid staff, whereas number volunteers’ decreases less likely break even. Clubs report having concept. possession club-owned facilities gyms remains unaffected.Implications reveal limited effects on development capacities, significant occurring only human resource driver professionalization. Implications theory practice discussed.
